Cwmhir court

The barns at Cwmhir Court were once part of the farm serving a Cistercian monastery founded in 1176 in what is now the village of Abbeycwmhir in Radnorshire. (The abbey itself was burned down by the forces of Owain Glyndwr in 1401 and the final remnants of the monastery were destroyed during the Civil War in the seventeenth century.) The buildings at Clyro, in various states of dilapidation, remained part of a working farm until the current owner bought and restored them at the turn of this century.The diarist Francis Kilvert was a curate of Clyro from 1874-76 and the landscape and its inhabitants are vividly described. It is said that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote his famous Sherlock Holmes tale, The Hound of the Baskervilles (1901) while staying at Clyro Court, built by the Baskerville family, across the road.
