Mr. Shem Booth-Spain

Shem Booth-Spain is a British multidisciplinary artist, musician, composer, media theorist, and cultural retreat host based in rural Tōei, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. With a BA in Fine Art and an MA in Sonic Culture, he brings over 20 years of international experience in creative practice, performance, and cross-cultural immersion. Shem co-runs Kura Retreat — a beautifully restored 130-year-old Japanese kura (storehouse) turned creative guesthouse and cultural hub — where he facilitates hands-on retreats blending art, music, mindfulness, and authentic rural Japanese experiences.His retreats emphasize synesthesia-inspired creativity (exploring how senses blend), farm-to-table dining, traditional tea ceremonies, kimono dressing, forest bathing, and artistic workshops. As a practicing visual artist (with works in collections across Japan, Europe, USA, and China) and musician (9+ albums spanning acoustic, experimental, electronic, and synthwave genres, plus his virtual band Namida Lumina), Shem creates transformative, multidisciplinary experiences that connect participants with nature, culture, and their own creative potential. He is also the co-founder of Blarecast Systems, a blockchain platform for artists, adding a unique layer of creative entrepreneurship to his programs.
