Jason Moon

While hosting radio and tv programs in his native New Zealand, Jason found his way to the yoga mat as a means to overcome a sport injury. An avid surfer and diver, Jason found a new peace in the focus he experienced when practicing yoga. In late 2012 Jason was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. “It’s cliché, but I realized I only had one go at this life. So, I moved to Ubud for love, for yoga, for giving up my ideas about one day growing up and settling back into a sensible job in New Zealand, and I stepped over the edge into a much more ‘alternative’ lifestyle.” “I was suddenly at the epicenter of wellness. I was finally doing a yoga teacher training, something I’d wanted to do for ages. I was fortunate that my girlfriend had lived in Ubud and worked in wellness for years, so our dinner parties were full of people who were sharing their experiences, and many were healers. My good friend Oksana started teaching me how to eat well to support my healing, and I was immersed in a whole town of health. It seemed like living well was easy.” “But then I got a simple virus that turned bad.” Jason developed a cerebral meningitis that caused his brain to swell dangerously while he lay in a coma. “That was dark. My mind wasn’t working, and nobody knew if it ever would again. After more than a month of barely getting out of bed, I decided I had to get involved in my own healing again if I was going to get better. I took control of my diet and decided that each day I would do some yoga. It wasn’t my old practice, I wasn’t the strong guy doing the crazy arm balances anymore, I was the guy resting in child’s pose with tears in my eyes. But I kept doing it, and I started to get strong again. On every level.” “I’m so grateful for the friends, therapists, teachers and healers who guided me through my healing journey. I was lucky, I was tapped in. Now, I really want to help others to find what they need in this beautiful place. And that’s different for everyone. It’s all here though – you just have to know where to find it. Great food, yoga and meditation, nature, surf, ecstatic dance, a long walk, a Balinese priestess or just a nice honest chat with somebody who knows the lay of the land.”
