The Bates Family – The Heart Behind FordounFordoun (pronounced “For-Dun”) is more than just a name — it’s a story of heritage, transformation, and heartfelt hospitality.Inspired by a parish in Kincardineshire, Scotland, and brought to life on the scenic rolling hills of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, Fordoun has grown into a multi-award-winning destination rooted in family, history, and a deep love for the land.The story begins in the early 1850s, when Byrne settler William Taylor was reminded of his homeland and named the farm “Fordoun” after the familiar landscapes of Scotland.Decades later, in the late 1940s, Lady Usher and Sir George Bates purchased the property as a winter escape from England. Enchanted by its beauty and serenity, they eventually made it their permanent home — a little piece of England in Africa.The Bates family have lived on the farm for over 20 years. Under the visionary leadership of Jon Bates, the original dairy was modernised into one of South Africa’s most efficient operations, significantly expanding the herd and productivity. In 2005, Jon made the bold decision to diversify, converting the historic 1860s homestead and dairy buildings into the luxurious Fordoun Hotel and Spa. Each suite was carefully curated to blend comfort with heritage, giving guests a sense of place and purpose.The latest chapter in the Fordoun journey includes the creation of a self-catering farm village, with 11 beautifully appointed cottages, a charming chapel, and a wedding and conference venue with panoramic views of the Drakensberg.Named after the Isle of Skye, and Jon’s daughter Skye, born just before its opening — the Skye Bistro is a heartfelt nod to family and tradition, offering a culinary experience steeped in local flavour and warmth.Today, Fordoun remains proudly family-owned and managed. This allows the Bates family to provide a truly personal touch, with service that reflects a genuine passion for hospitality.Whether you're visiting for a wellness retreat, a romantic escape, or a Midlands wedding, the Fordoun experience is grounded in authenticity, intimacy, and a sense of coming home.
